Rather "heavy" reading list that. If I'd use something like this here: I'd expect either to scare off most students interested in the subject: either because they take the reading list as a "serious" item and don't want to read that much, or because they think "he just wants to show off".

Yep, I've had that feeling too. ) But it might be that it is something like 'further reading'. I too give such lists sometimes - but we only take some texts from them. The idea is that if someone gets truly interested s/he will go on with it. I am sure from the *outside* it would look quite scary, but *inside* you kind of talk it over with students...

Sounds like a plausible explanation to me. Although, I myself, I'd be more cautious, and tend not to distribute such a list via the web.
